Suggestions For Helping Your Toddler To Sleep

25 November 2009 No Comment

We all need a certain amount of sleep every night to keep our bodies functioning as best as possible. Sleep helps the people to cope with illnesses and makes them active. There can be various problems without sleep. This is found not only in adults but also in babies and toddlers. If your toddler has a sleeping problem, there are several things that you can do to aid your child in sleeping. If your baby has a sleeping problem, some of these tips also apply.

Attachment Parenting Solutions

If you have a toddler with sleeping problems, the best way to help them to sleep is to become an attached parent. Many toddler sleeping problems are caused by fear. If your toddler is in another room and does not share your bedroom, it can be scary for them. It is dark, and mommy and daddy are nowhere around. You may find that your toddler sleeping problem involves him or her waking periodically throughout the night and crying. You may also find that your toddler frequently enters your bed at night. That is okay! The most natural place for a toddler to sleep is in the parent’s bed. While many cultures dissuade this, it is very prevalent in other cultures.

An attached parent will allow their toddler to combat a sleeping problem by sleeping with their parents. Some of the biggest bonding moments are when you and your toddler are snuggled in bed and drifting off to sleep. Of course, in order to keep this sleeping environment safe, make sure that you research proper co-sleeping guidelines and implement them into your bedroom.

What Not To Do

For many years, it has been suggested that the only way to solve a toddler sleeping problem is to let the toddler cry it out. However, among attached parents and even many non attached parents, this is not seen as the best solution to a toddler sleeping problem. All this does is reinforce the idea that mommy and daddy are not available to help the child with his or her fears or problems. Allowing a child to cry him or herself to sleep is unnecessarily cruel to the child and will only cause the child to fear nighttime and bedtime. This is no way to solve a toddler sleeping problem.

That said, some children will wake up in the middle of the night and whimper a big before falling back to sleep. This is different from crying it out. The best thing you can do for your toddler sleeping problem if he or she is waking up and whimpering for a few minutes in the middle of the night is to stand at their door until they calm down. Do not let them see you, but make sure that it does not escalate to true crying.

Solving a toddler sleeping problem can be difficult and time consuming, but eventually your child will sleep on his or her own and your time snuggling and sharing a bed will be a fond memory.
