REM is the period of sleep that is associated with dreaming. If during the time that you are experiencing a dream and you are suddenly woken up then you will experience REM sleep paralysis. The paralysis sets in because the transition from being totally asleep to being fully awake is a gradual process. When the disruption is sudden the speed with which the body and the brain reacts is not the same and you are likely to experience the paralysis.

Why does it occur when you are having dreams? The reason for this is that a dream is not a threat to you physically. So when sleep is suddenly interrupted during REM sleep and you try and react to things you believe to be real, the paralysis sets in.. Things that will dirupt your normal sleeping routine will cause you to experience sleep paralysis. There are some things that the brain reacts to even if you are asleep. The brain does respond to light and sound. So usually sleeping in a dark and quiet room should lessen the occurrences of REM sleep paralysis.

There are also some things that are known to precipitate this condition. If you take alcohol, caffeine or smoke at night or before you sleep you are increasing the chances of experiencing sleep paralysis. Try and be relaxed and stress free especially at night.
