Should You Use Retinol Skin Care Products?
Filed Under (Skin Care) by jeandit

Retinol skin care products have been found to be effective for lessening fine lines and wrinkles and for boosting the level of oils in the skin for people middle aged or older. They are also helpful in improving the the skin’s condition for people with chronic cystic acne. In addition retinol skin care {products} are especially useful for those who have sensitive, aging skin who might not be able to use other harsher preparations. Many people have experienced red, dry or scaly skin after they have used a glycolic acid or other type of chemical peel and for these a better choice would be a retinol containing cream that is applied daily.

Studies of Retinol Skin Care Treatments

Many researchers are concluding that retinol certainly has a favorable effect on aging skin. A fairly recent study at the University of Michigan tried out retinol containing lotions on 36 elderly, fit people, most of them around 80 years of age. Over the course of 6 months they applied the lotion to an area on their arms. At the conclusion of the trial skin biopsies showed considerable lessening of wrinkles and fine lines. If this works so well for an eighty year old’s skin then it must undoubtedly help much younger skin to regain or retain a young-looking appearance! Unfortunately the effect is not permanent as some of the test participants found that their skin had begun to go back to its previous state after a further 6 months with no retinol treatment.

What is Retinol?

Retinol is another name for vitamin A and is one of a group of chemicals known as retinoids. These type of compounds also includes tretinoin which is found in lotions and creams that are prescription only as it is a great deal stronger than retinol. All of these compounds are tiny, so small indeed that they are able to go through the skin’s upper layers to reach the elastin and collagen that support the skin from beneath. Vitamin A is a fundamental constituent of collagen and elastin. Over the years environmental damage occurs to these structures the outcome of which is decreased skin support resulting in lines and wrinkles. Retinoids, after penetrating to this layer, set about repairing the collagen and elastin, the outcome of which is a smoother, firmer skin with fewer lines.

Acne Treatments Using Retinol

Retinol products are very good exfoliating agents and they also effectively unclog pores. This makes them excellent preparations to use if you suffer from acne.

Retinol for Dry Skin

Retinol skin care products are excellent for the care of very dry skin as they are very good moisturisers.

Are There Any Side Effects?

Initially when using a retinol skin care product you may observe some mild irritation, redness, stinging or itching. This is usually very temporary and is perfectly normal. If it lasts longer than a few days you should stop using the preparation.

Retinol Increases Sun Sensitivity

The best time to use retinol skin care products is late in the evening or before going to bed. They do make the skin more sensitive to the sun’s rays so if you do apply them in the day be certain to use a sun screen as well.
