Acne Remedies and Advice

When you have acne, it seems like you can’t get to a remedy fast enough.Sometimes too much choice is as bad as too little choice, how can you know which acne remedy is best for you?

So many remedies, so many results

The truth about acne remedies is that no single remedy will work perfectly for every single person. The main reason why so many different acne remedies exist is the many different ways that people with acne react to treatment. This means that unless luck is on your side, a process of trial and error is inevitable.

If you are looking for a remedy to treat your acne, here are some suggestions for how to work through the process:

1.You should start with clean skin.By focusing on clean skin you are making life difficult for one of the main contributory factors of acne, bacteria.  Establish a routine of washing your face gently each morning and each evening, using a mild face wash formulated for acne-prone skin.

2.Improve your routine by adding an anti-acne formula.A cleanser with a stronger anti-acne formula is one possibility if your acne proves resistant to regular face washing.Recommended choices are formulas containing either salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. The best approach is to start using the milder formulations and if required move on to some stronger formulations.

3.Change to a new anti-acne formula. It is an unfortunate fact of life that not everyone’s skin will react favourably to a particular acne remedy.Should this happen and it is not uncommon, switch to a different anti-acne formula; for example, try salicylic acid instead of benzoyl peroxide, and of course the reverse is also perfectly valid.

4.Ask your doctor for other options.  If your acne doesn’t respond to these kinds of over the counter acne remedies, pay a visit to your doctor. There is help available to you as you try and get your acne under control. Your doctor can choose from a wide range of topical creams, gels and mild antibiotics.  For many people, spending just a few weeks or months using an antibiotic treatment is enough to get their acne under control and allow them to go back to using over the counter acne remedies.

There’s no substitute for time

All acne remedies share one common attribute, they do need time to work.Wonderful though it would be to have 100% clear skin after a couple of applications, it just isn’t realistic. Gradual improvement however, in a couple of weeks or so most certainly is realistic.  If you are not seeing improvement in that amount of time (or the improvement is not as much as you would like) then move up to the next level of care for a few weeks and see what happens.

It’s possible that you have quite severe acne or react negatively to some of the acne remedies you try. In these scenarios, consult your doctor as soon as possible. There are a great many different acne remedies available, which fortunately for acne sufferers, work in a great many different ways.  With some professional guidance from your doctor or dermatologist, a little bit of patience, and a little bit of time, you can get relief for your acne and find yourself enjoying the self-confidence and comfort that comes with clean, acne-free skin.
