Teenage Alcohol Abuse: A Crucial Problem
Alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among adolescents is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Numerous chemical dependency consultants affirm that beer, liquor, and wine ads created by the media are a major reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.
Other alcohol abuse experts think that the increase in teen alcohol abuse is due to the toleration and ease of access of wine, liquor, and beer in our society.
Still other substance abuse specialists claim that numerous adolescents get involved in risky drinking because of the increased disquiet that they undergo.
From a slightly different vantage point, since both parents in a number of families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance clearly has to play a key part in the escalation of youth alcohol abuse. And lastly, different alcohol abuse consultants emphasize the point that the spread of teen alcohol abuse is due, at some level, to our lenient society.
Coping Skills Education and Alcohol Abuse
One feature of teenage alcohol abuse that looks as if it under reported in the substance abuse research literature, however, is the paucity of educational programs that teach adolescents how to further develop their coping skills so that their destructive drinking behavior is significantly diminished or eradicated.
More specifically, science has disclosed the fact that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and excessive drinking. In point of fact, this means that the worse the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a truthful declaration, why isn’t coping skills instruction a key part of the academic curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?
A Society That Emphasizes Teenage Coping Skills
Let us create a scenario for for the purpose of illumination. Let us imagine a society in which all individuals are trained how to achieve high-quality coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including the twelfth grade.
In such a society, when life gets demanding, students who are ”coping skills experts” will be able to respond in a more healthy and more rewarding way, as opposed to others who fail to put their coping skills into practice.
More specifically, students who demonstrate outstanding coping skills will be more able to think logically and show signs of superior decision making as opposed to adolescents who, because they failed to obtain outstanding coping skills, are drawn to the “quick fix” of hazardous drinking.
What would happen in the above “ideal” society, what’s more, if adolescents not only received top shelf coping skills instruction but also obtained a top quality education that underscored the short term and long term destructive consequences associated with drug abuse and alcohol abuse? Emphasizing these drug and alcohol abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills instruction, it is affirmed, would help teens avoid the noticeable charm interlinked with teenage drinking and, for that reason, would fundamentally reduce the abusive drinking behavior exhibited by adolescents in our country.
Teenage Excessive Drinking: Conclusion
There are positively many convincing reasons why so many of our teenagers drink in an abusive manner. Such a thorny issue demands a wide-ranging and relevant preventative and educational response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our teens can learn how to cope with life’s difficulties in a more rewarding and responsible manner rather than gravitating to excessive drinking behavior to solve their difficulties.

Much needed article.
As a recovering alcoholic, I personally feel that both myself & my late hubby cultivated our desire to consume alcohol in our late teens, from our biological mothers drinking from their early teens & on.
I’m not trying to pass the blame, no, but, we each had a proven ability to drink without getting drunk & used it for coping with stress.
While it was acceptable, it resulted in such damage to our health, with no forewarning signs, nor any cure(s), it basically destroyed our future.
What we need is health warning labels to be mandatory on all liquor containers. While many of us here in Canada have been striving madly for our Government to pass this legislation, it still, remains to be seen.
