Learn The Facts You Just Have To Understand Prior To Having Liposuction

25 June 2009 No Comment

Liposuction is also called|is often referred to as lipectomy (“suction-assisted fat removal”), liposculpture or lipoplasty (“fat modeling”) and is a type of body contouring. Alternatively put fat is extracted from different parts of the body attempting to achieve a optimal shape. Liposuction has been available since the nineteen sixties but it is only since the 1990′s that it has increased in popularity. Prior to this the techniques employed were not as successful, often with mixed results. It was in the nineteen nineties that ultrasound was incorporated into the liposuction technique, making it far less difficult to remove more body fat. This was achieved by liquefying the fat first.

It is not uniquely women who make appointments with liposuction surgeons but also men. 20 years ago this was hardly ever heard of, but these days men are frequently having the same beauty treatments as women. There are parts of the body which men specifically wish sculptured, for example, abdomen, male breasts and flanks, women often want to target such regions of the body as the thighs, abdomen and hips. Whatever part one chooses to have targeted it would be wise to keep in mind that all cosmetic surgery is not without risk. Unfortunately there are negative aspects to having liposuction, if an extremely large amount of fat is removed, the area can sometimes be lumpy, or appear to have rifts in the skin.

A very important fact about liposuction, which must never be overlooked, is that it isn’t a low-effort alternative to exercise and diet. There are numerous contraindications to liposuction and one of them is being dangerously overweight. A surgeon will commonly refuse to perform liposuction on any person who is morbidly or severely obese. This is not an act of discrimination, but purely a medical decision based upon facts. Folk who are obese are usually rather unfit and not generally in  good health, both of which cancels out one’s eligibility for the procedure. There are also risks with anesthesia if folk are overweight. The optimal candidates for liposuction are those patients who are in rather good shape and healthy, and who have not had tobacco for several months previously.

Liposuction is performed either; under local anesthesia with sedation, local anesthesia, or general anesthesia. At first the surgeon will make very small cuts in the skin at the sites where the extra fat is to be extracted. Commonly the fat is extracted via a cannula and aspirator (a hollow tube and a suction device) During the surgery, several contributing factors are taken into consideration which can limit the amount of fat that can be safely removed. The safety issues are not only related to the amount of fat extracted, but also to the overall health of the patient having liposuction, and the chosen anesthesia used.
