An Introduction To Ashtanga Primary Series
The ashtanga yoga workout consists of the Primary, Intermediate and Advanced Series of poses. Each one starts off with the Surya Namaskara or the Sun Salutations and then proceeds to its first set, the standing postures. Bend bending is the usual end posture for each set however the postures are unique to each set and the finishing sequence often involve shoulder stands, headstands and lotus. It can take a lot of years of practicing daily before one can master the ashtanga primary series, as well as the other series that use the ashtanga yoga workout.
The Yoga Chikitsa will help develop a healthy mind and body. You can build stamina and flexibility and align your spine while doing this workout. The yogi is subjected to about an one and a half hours to two hours of intense yoga workout. For a full workout the yoga instructor may or may not utilize all the 75 poses in the ashtanga primary series.
The workout always begins with sun salutations and the same goes for the other steps in the series. This is done so the body will be purified and health can be restored. The Surya Namaskara is subdivided into two the Surya Namaskara A and the Surya Namaskara B. Either way a series of 18 poses has to be done in order to prepare the body for the asana.
After the Surya Namaskara the primary series shift to the standing poses. This pose requires flexibility from the yogi as well as prepares him/her to the more difficult, seated pose in the series of Yoga Chikitsa. The seated Chikitsa is considered more challenging since it involves more complex positions and it needs more coordination and concentration.
The yogi assumes to posture of corpse at the end of the yoga session signaling that the body is in a state of utter relaxation. Rigorous and strenuous at the same time the Chikitsa is deemed to be the most challenging form of ashtanga. If you have the right instructor you might consider putting up with ashtanga yoga despite it being challenging just to stay healthy. Thus is the process of the ashtanga primary series.
