A Glucose Meter helps diabetics test their blood sugar

26 January 2010 No Comment

When someone has diabetes, they essentially are having a problem where their body is unable to produce enough insulin and they need to monitor and control their sugars themselves. Firstly, there are two types of people with diabetes – Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes. Having injections using needles is the main way a person with Type 1 Diabetes controls and lowers their sugar levels. A person with Type 2 Diabetes may also need to use insulin injections if their blood sugar levels go out of control, but normally they will control their sugars by diet and pills. To know which type of diabetes you have, you will need to get a proper diagnosis by a doctor or physician.

Controlling blood sugar levels is definately something that needs to be done by a person with diabetes. To find out what level their blood sugars are at, whether high or low, a diabetic uses a glucometer to get a blood sugar reading. For those diabetics that cannot afford to purchase a glucose meter outright, their work coverage mght pay for it and you basically get a free glucometer. To use the glucose meter, the person testing their sugar levels will use a lancet device to prick one of their fingers. This basically draws a small drop of blood from the person fingers so the levels can be measured. The drop of blood would be put onto a blood strip that has been put into their glucose meter. Normally in about five seconds, or even up to a minute depending on the meter, you will get a reading telling you what your sugar levels are at.

The glucose meter is essential for a diabetic to own so they can test regularly. If you don’t test your blood sugars, problems can occur if an incorrect dosage of their medication is given including low sugars and seizures. Compared to a decade ago, the price of blood glucose meters has gone down and are easier to pay for. You may also find certain brands offering you a free glucometer if you buy the accompanying test strips. Since many manufacturers make most of the money from the strips purchase, you get that added incentive of a free monitor to be used with their strips.
